The Best of Barrington by Those Who Live Here

I roam corners of the Barrington area to learn how everyday residents will answer this question: “What is the best part of living in the Barrington area?” My follow up question: “How do you stay connected to that part?” Here’s how people responded.

Ed Felice is part of a four-generation family living here. For him the best of Barrington is, “The lively, small, yet successful, community feel. Within Barrington we have various ‘communities’ but we all comprise Barrington and celebrate our total events and achievements.” He adds, “The community desires, respects, and benefits from an outstanding education system.” He says the best way to connect is to stay involved.

Cheryl Laurence agrees. “The best part is the wonderful people. I am inspired daily by the number of nonprofits and volunteers serving our community and the Chicagoland area. Having these giving individuals influences my life, my children, and grandchildren’s lives. I cannot imagine a better place.” She volunteers in several groups. “I plan to continue to serve as much as I can, when I can, as long as I can.”

During Thursday Night Out, an event that runs throughout the summer months, I see Mick Hayes who is working the sound equipment for the band that is playing this night. For him, the best part of living here also centers around community. “It’s the beautiful atmosphere in our gorgeous town. I attend as many local events as possible. I enjoy participating in whatever the general vibe of the town is.”

That vibe changes with the seasons. Some people mention the Scarecrow Fest, visits from Santa in winter, and the spring Wine Walk as favorites.

I meet 9-year-old Ella at the Farmers’ Market. She describes her best part: “I like how many local shops there are. There are many different stores to go to.” I ask her how often she shops. “We’re down here a lot,” she says.

Helen Ye says the best part of living in the Barrington area is having her kids in the school district where she meets other parents and shares in activities. She stays connected through fundraising events, work, and kids and adult group activities including sports.

As for me, nowadays the best parts are strolling, cycling, and skiing through Citizens Park and attending cultural events at Barrington’s White House. Both are unique to the Barrington area, and places that nurture mind, body, and soul by and for the community.
